When I wrote the first version of "ER" (1999), I had in mind a strange story which is in a work of the Greek philosopher Plato. In "The Republic" Plato tells the story of a soldier called "ER". During a ferocious fight, ER is left for dead on the battlefield. His comrades pick him up and place him on a pyre. As they are about to set fire to it the soldiers see ER get up. ER had travelled to the land of the dead and had come back from there.
For a long time, the musical form of this work seemed to me “inappropriate”. During the summer 2007, I decided starting from scratch again; the symphonic poem "ER" has been completely (re) composed.
